Welcome to the UKAVita project
About the UKAVita project
Biogas technology is a promising alternative to reduce environmental burden caused by organic waste and agricultural residues and to generate renewable energy in Vietnam. However, there are several challenges associated with it such as:
corrosion in biogas plants and gas usage facilities due to the presence of H2S, gas leakages due to inappropriate dimensioning and construction of the biogas plants, and nutrients and pathogens entering the soil, surface and ground water bodies due to lacking effluent treatment.
In Germany, over the past years biogas technology has made great strives in terms of environmental performance. This experience will proof helpful for the improvement and further implementation of biogas technologies in Vietnam.
The German-Vietnamese cooperation project UKAVita stands for Environment- and climate-sound adaptation of biogas plants in Vietnam. It supports cooperation among stakeholders via the Vietnamese Biogas Network.
- by enabling future biogas projects
- through a web platform for country-specific data on biogas technologies and biomass potentials
and
- by organizing an interactive workshop.
NEWS

Mr. Tobias Bertsch has submitted and successfully defended his Bachelor Thesis at TU Berlin within the framework of UKAVita project. The title of his thesis is "Assessment of small-scale biogas plants – Evaluation of an onsite survey in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam”.
Final project deliverable
10/04/2019The report is released and can be downloaded. The UKAVita project aims to investigate the environmental and technical problems of biogas plants, optimization of biogas utilization and building a network to connect stakeholders in biogas field in Vietnam. This report documents the final evaluation results for UKAVita project – Environmental and climate sound adaptation of biogas plants in Vietnam.

Mr. Philipp Dorn has submitted and successfully defended his Bachelor Thesis at TU Berlin within the framework of UKAVita project. The title of his thesis is "Evaluation of agricultural residues as biogas substrates – A study in Mekong Delta, Vietnam”.
Investigation of alternative biogas utilization options and the test in small-scale biogas plant in Vietnam
05/10/2018One project partner – Herbst Umwelt Technik GmbH (HUT) will conduct a desk-study of alternative options for using biogas. This study can help to identify other possible biogas utilization and to understand whether it is suitable with the context of Vietnam, especially Mekong River Delta. On the other hand, to optimize the biogas use, HUT will make a trial by equipping the selected small-scale biogas plants in Tien Giang province with FerroSorp® filter – a product from HUT, which can filter H2S from biogas and then conduct the efficiency test in a sustainable manner.
Survey for small- and mid-scale biogas plant in Mekong river Delta
20/09/2018After a relatively long preparation, Can Tho University will start to conduct the survey about the small- and mid-scale biogas plants in Mekong River Delta with the focus on the household biogas users in three provinces: sub-urban areas of a big city (Can Tho province), sub-urban areas of a province (Soc Trang) and rural area of province (Hau Giang). Data collection will be done via the interview using the questionnaire, investigate the biogas plant of the household users, and collection of water samples (input and output). The biogas composition will be measured on site and the water samples will be analyzed at the laboratory of CTU. The survey time is from September to November 2018.
Round Robin test with the participation of three laboratories
10/04/2018The Round Robin test is conducted with the purpose of checking the quality assurance of the participating laboratories. The scientist group from TU Berlin gave the same samples to the three labs and the analysis will be performed independently in these labs. The results will be analyzed and give the conclusion about the precision and the analysis quality of the participants.
Training for the students of Can Tho University for doing survey and sampling
04/04/2017The group of students from Can Tho University will join the activity of doing survey with the questionnaire and taking samples from the biogas plants in Mekong River Delta. The purpose of this activity is to find out the problems and the disadvantages of the small and mid-scale biogas plants in the region. A training day was organized to help the students have a good preparation before conducting the survey. During the day, the scientists from TU Berlin has explained and discussed with the students about the questionnaire and with the assistance from Dr. Tran Sy Nam, a sampling trial was done in the Biogas Park of Can Tho University.
Visiting the facilities of the laboratories in Can Tho University
03/04/2018Can Tho University is one of the UKAVita project's partners, which has experience and several studies done on biogas field in Vietnam. On the 3rd April 2018, the scientist from TU Berlin had a visit to the laboratories in Can Tho Univerisy, which are the laboratory of the Environmental and Natural Resources Faculty and the laboratory of the Agriculture Faculty.
Meeting with the scientists at Can Tho University
02/04/2018Prof. Vera Susanne Rotter with the scientists from TU Berlin had visited and had a discussion with Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hoang and Dr. Nguyen Vo Chau Ngan from the Chair of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, Can Tho University. The discussion was about the working package of doing survey about the small- and mid-scale biogas plants in Mekong River Delta. Two parties had talked about the content of the questionnaires, the quantity of the biogas plants and also introduce the group of students, who will join this project activity.
Investigate and taking samples from the large-scale biogas plant in Dong Thap province
01/04/2018With the support of Biogas Viet company, the scientist group from Germany had visited a large-scale biogas plant in Dong Thap province. The size of the biogas plant is more than 20000m3, constructed with HDPE material. This plant starts working from 11/2017. Currently, the biogas from the plant is all burnt by using a gas flare.
The excursion to biogas plants in the South of Vietnam
27/03/2018In the second day of the workshop, the participants joined an excursion to visit the 2 biogas plants in medium and large scale in Binh Duong province. Both bio plants are designed and constructed by APO CORP. using HDPE material. Pig manure is the feedstock for the two biogas plants. In one biogas plant, the power generators are used and generate electricity from the biogas. The excursion was helpful and gave the participants a closer look at the mid- and large-scale biogas plants in Vietnam.
Workshop "Environmental and climate-friendly adaptation of biogas plants in Vietnam" took place at Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam
26/03/2018The UKAVita project team in collaboration with HCMC University of Science has successfully organized the workshop "Environmental and climate-friendly adaptation of biogas plants in Vietnam" with the participation of many biogas companies from Vietnam and Germany and the professors, scientists coming from different universities in the South of Vietnam. In the first part of the workshop, the presentations had shown the development of biogas technology in Germany and the status-quo and the trend of the biogas plants in Vietnam. In the second part, the interacive session was done within the groups in order to develop business models from creative ideas using biogas technology, dicuss about the challanges and solutions.
Invitation and registration for UKAVita workshop
15/02/2018UKAVita project will organize a workshop called "Environmental and climate-friendly adaptation of biogas plants in Vietnam" at Ho Chi Minh University of Science on the 26th and the 27th of March 2018. With the participation of the experts and biogas companies from Vietnam and Germany, the purpose of the workshop are to share the experience in the biogas technology, to introduce the product and services of the companies from boths countries and to increase the chances for making business and research cooperation in Vietnam.
